“65 is the average age of farmers, and there are not enough young farmers to replace them.” Director Spencer MacDonald asks, “How did we get here?”
In the summer of 2015, Spencer and Producer Eva Verbeeck joined forces to produce a short film on young farmers in the Pacific Northwest. The two loaded their iPods with old bluegrass music and set off in a 1990 Nissan truck, ready for the journey from Portland to British Columbia. Having spent much time WOOFing (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms), the two offered their labor to the young farmers they met along the way in exchange for room and board.
Age of the Farmer is an attempt to express some of the thoughts and feelings of these farmers in hopes that “a little bit of justice was done” on their behalf.
