2017 RVA EFF Local Film Contest

Submission Info

RVA Environmental Film Festival committee invites submission to its fourth annual local documentary film contest. Entrants should read the following rules, terms, and conditions before submitting any video.

Eligibility

Entrants must be 18 years of age or older. All entrants younger than 18 years of age at the start of the contest must submit a signed parental consent form. All entrants must be a resident of Virginia to be considered. Contest is void where prohibited by law.

Contest judges and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.

Entries

Entries will start being accepted from July 30, 2016 at noon through December 31, 2016 at 11:59 pm. The RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) reserves the right to extend the entry period to ensure a competitive pool of entries. Any extension and new deadline for entries will be announced on the RVA EFF website.

Selected finalists will be determined by January 15, 2017. A winner and runners-up will be announced and presented at the RVA EFF on Sunday, February 12, 2017.

Please submit entries by mailing a DVD of the video entry with entry fee to RVA EFF. c/o Scott Burger, 612 S. Laurel Street, Richmond, VA 23220.

Entries must be submitted to the RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF). It should include the video on DVD or thumb drive, a written brief description of the video, complete credits, and complete contact information. In addition, a $10 corresponding, nonrefundable entry fee must be made to the Enrichmond Foundation (note: RVA EFF Film Contest). Entrees that are not accompanied by entry fee will be eliminated from the competition.

Submitted video should be about environmental subjects in Virginia. Those subjects can include a wide range of topics- wildlife to human relationships, politics to development, parks to pollution. Outdoor recreation can also be a part of the environmental theme. All entries should incorporate at least some footage created in Virginia.

All films must be original, newly-produced works, created after January 1, 2015. Entries must be original compositions, filmed by the submitter, and not infringe on the copyrights of any other parties. Any video suspected, in the discretion of RVA EFF committee, to be in violation will be rejected immediately from the competition.

The RVA EFF does not grant entrants the right or access to film private property or use of its name to secure access.

Videos may have multiple co-producers, but one should be listed as the primary contact upon entry. The fair dissemination of any prize winnings will be the responsibility of the primary contact.

Video must contain audio and video. Videos that do not depict Virginia environmental subjects will not be accepted.

Videos should not exceed two hours in length. Brevity is welcome.

Participants may submit multiple entries (1 original video per entry).

All forms of footage, including audio, video, and photos, that are not produced by the entrant must be credited to the original producer.

Entries containing immoral, defamatory, obscene or scandalous content, or any other content which, at the sole discretion of the RVA Environmental Film Festival committee, is not in the keeping with the RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF), will be deemed ineligible.

By submitting a video, each filmmaker represents that the video submitted is an original work that does not infringe on the copyright or intellectual property right of another party, and each filmmaker agrees to indemnify RVA Environmental Film Festival, its committee members, and judges from all liability arising from any alleged infringement in this regard.

Filmmaker retains ownership rights to the submitted video. However, the winning entrants grant to the RVA EFF the non-exclusive, non-transferable right and license to use the winning videos and the winners’ names and likenesses in perpetuity without compensation, notification, or other limitation or condition, both in conjunction with the competition and promotion of the competition and promotion of the competition and in promotion of the RVA EFF generally.

RVA Environmental Film Festival is not responsible for entries that are not received or not received properly, or for any technical problems with corrupt digital files, invalid links, internet outages, computer failures, and the like. RVA EFF is not responsible for lost, late, or misdirected entries. RVA EFF is not obligated to acknowledge receipt of entries.

Judging

Entries will be judged by a panel made up of members of the RVA EFF committee and film experts invited by the RVA EFF committee. Judges’s decisions will be final and binding.

To select the winner, entries will be by judged by awarding of points based on the following criteria: (1) adherence to environmental theme (30%), (2) originality (30%), (3) composition and coherence of audio and video (20%), (4) quality of cinematography (20%). In the event of a tie score, the tie will be broken by awarding the prize to the entrant with the highest score in the first of the above-listed criteria (in order of appearance) as to which there is no tie.

Prizes

First prize consists of a $1,000 check and the opportunity to show the winning entry at the RVA EFF held February 6-12, 2017. Runners-up will receive a $100 check and the opportunity to show entries at the festival. RVA EFF committee will choose day, time, and venue of the film screening during the festival. The winner agrees to to be available to appear at the RVA EFF during the screening of the film.

No transfers of prizes or substitutions will be allowed except by RVA EFF committee, which may substitute prizes of equal or greater value if necessary.

Applicable federal, state, and local taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner.

Winners must sign an affidavit confirming agreement to contest rules and originality of the video. Failure to return that affidavit by a specified date will result in an alternate winner being chosen.

Other Contest Rules

The RVA EFF committee reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify, suspend, or cancel the contest for any reason. In such event, entrants will be notified and entries will be disregarded.

The contest is subject to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and is void where prohibited by law.
